Investment preference: Crypto

Written by Laurène Soubrier

What is it?

The Crypto investment preference gives you exposure to cryptocurrencies as part of your diversified investment portfolio. If you activate this option, Selma will allocate a small part of your portfolio to cryptocurrency ETFs.

Is this preference for me?

If you've been curious about crypto and have a strong risk ability and willingness, this preference might be for you.

It's a suitable option if you would like a small allocation invested in cryptocurrencies while keeping the majority of your investments broadly diversified across other asset classes.

☝️ Keep in mind that cryptocurrencies are considered a higher-risk asset class and can experience significant price fluctuations. In extreme scenarios, you could lose all of the money allocated to them.

Are there requirements to toggle this preference on?

Yes. To enable the Crypto investment preference, you need a minimum of 7'500 CHF invested in your investment account. You'll also need to be strongly suited for higher-risk assets: a strong risk ability and willingness are a must.

If you have activated the Crypto preference and no longer meet these requirements, it will be disabled automatically.

How can I enable the Crypto investment preference?

You can enable or disable this investment preference through the mobile app:

  1. Go to Portfolio > Strategy > Manage portfolio.

  2. Tap Continue.

  3. Tick (or untick) the Crypto option, then Continue.

  4. Review and confirm your new investment strategy before it takes effect.

What happens when I enable the Crypto investment preference?

After you turn on the Crypto preference and confirm your updated investment plan, Selma will gradually adjust your portfolio to reach the target allocation:

  • 5% of your portfolio is allocated to crypto.

  • Two-thirds of the crypto allocation is invested in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT).

  • One third of the crypto allocation is invested in the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA).

The remaining 95% of your portfolio continues to follow your personalised investment strategy.

What cryptocurrencies are included?

The Crypto investment preference uses a predefined allocation to Bitcoin (via IBIT) and Ethereum (via ETHA).

Note that it currently cannot be customised further.

How long does it take to take effect?

Selma proceeds with the adjustment as quickly as possible. You'll typically see changes in your portfolio allocation within a few banking days.

Does it cost anything?

While Selma does not charge any additional fees for enabling this feature, as with any portfolio adjustment, indirect costs may apply:

  • Spread costs: These are the differences between buying and selling prices for investment products.

  • Currency exchange costs: If international holdings are sold, exchange rate differences may impact the final amounts.

  • Foreign exchange fees: In case an ETF trades in a currency other than CHF, a foreign exchange transaction is automatically applied.
